WELCH
CYNTHIA
(Sintha) WELCH was born on 20 December 1814 in Georgia and
died at Georges Camp, Soso, Jones County, Mississippi, on 15
September 1887. About 1832 in Mississippi, she married Allen
Vallentine (see Valentine) who was
born on 27 May 1808 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina, and
died on 3 March 1901 in Jones County, Mississippi. They are buried
in the Union Line Cemetery, near Soso.
Cynthia
was born in Georgia and we find Richard, her grandfather, living
in Bryan County, Georgia, in 1802. It was possibly here that her
parents, Bryant and Sabra, met and were married and their first
six children were born; the younger five were born in Mississippi.
Cynthia and her twin sister, Mercy, were only six months old when
Bryant, his father, and brothers--John, Timothy, Henry, and
James--Ieft Bryan County, Georgia, and moved to Covington County,
Mississippi, where they lived in 1820.
For
the children of Allen and Cynthia, see "Valentine."
Cynthia was the daughter of
BRYANT
WELCH was born in South Carolina before June 1791, and died
about 1830 in Mississippi. About 1807, in Bryan County,
Georgia, he married Sally (Sabra) Martin.
Bryant
came to Bryan County, Georgia, with his father around 1802. He was
married there around 1807 and their first six children were born
in Georgia before the family started their move to Mississippi in
January 1815. They moved, first, to Wayne County where they were
living in 1816, and then to Covington County, Mississippi, by
1820.
The
children of Bryant. and Sally were: Martin; Betsy, married Asa
Anderson, brother of Sarah
Anderson, wife of Stacy Collins (see Collins)
; Judith, married Drury Bynum; James, married Mary Valentine;
Cynthia (see above) (twin), born 20 December 1814, died 15
September 1887, and married Allen Valentine; Mercy (twin), born 20
December 1814 and married, first, a Doris, and, second, John
Chambers; the following children were born in Mississippi; Sarah,
married Darell Valentine (brother of Allen) ; John Ira, married
Katy Brynum; Timothy W., married Mary Elzy; Tabitha, married I. L.
Welborn; and Desdmonia, married Riley James Collins (son ff Stacy
Collins).
Bryant
was the son of Richard and Mary Welch.
RICHARD
WELCH was born in the Sumter District, South Carolina, in
1762, and died on 10 November 1838, in Natchez, Mississippi. He
married, first, in South Carolina, Mary (Marguerite) Stuart who
died there before June 1791. The children 0f Richard and Mary
were: Timothy, born 4 January 1785 and died 4 July 1872; John;
Henry; and Bryant (see above), died about 1830 and married Sally
Martin.
Richard
married, second, in South Carolina, on 10 June 1791 Sarah Ervin
who was born 17 October 1768. She was the daughter of Hugh and
Elizabeth James Ervin. The Col. John Ervin Family Bible records
this under Marriages, as follows: "Sarah Ervin to Richard
Welch, Rev. Soldier of Charleston, South Carolina, son of James
Welch and descendant of the Reformers, John Welch and John Knox,
on 10 June 1791." They had a son, James, born in the Sumter
District, South Carolina, on 11 January 1799, died 25 July 1882,
and married Martha Hobart Hill. Sarah Ervin Welch is said to have
died in South Carolina and we see Richard moving to Bryan County,
Georgia, in 1802. Richard married, third, before 1807, Faraby. It
is thought that there were no children of this marriage.
Richard
seems to have lived in the Sumter District, South Carolina, until
about 1802 when he was living in Bryan County, Georgia. In January
1815, he and his children and their families moved to Wayne
County, Mississippi, where they were living in 1816, and on to
Covington County, Mississippi, where they settled in Oakeywork
Creek and were living as shown in the 1820 Census.
As
noted in the marriage entry in the Ervin Bible, Richard Welch was
a Revolutionary Soldier. The Historical Commission of South
Carolina has in its files an account against the state for L
2.11.5 submitted by Richard Welch for 36 days as a private in
General Marion's Brigade in 1782. See also the Book Copy of the
Original Index Book Showing Revolutionary Claims filed in South

Battle of Bothwell Bridge in 1679. The Covenanters were religious
extremists and regarded all Scotland, other than themselves, as
lost
souls.
John was contending for "freedom to preach" and for
twenty years preached in the hills and in the fields. Armed
parties were sent into the hills to break up the meetings and
"a price was set upon his head." Because of this
persecution, many Covenanters, including his son, Thomas, came to
