DOLLAHITE
MARY ANN DOLLAHITE was born on
30 January 1826 and died on 7 November 1899.(1)
She is buried in the Gum Springs Cemetery, just east of Longview,
Texas. On 7 October 1845, she married, first, B. F.
Haliburton, a wealthy Tennessean, who died about 1848. After his
death, she went to Mississippi enroute to join
her family in Texas. She delayed her trip there, as her father
wrote there was a scarlet fever epidemic in Texas.
It is thought that while in
Mississippi, about 1849, she married, second, Riley Barber Woodall
(see Woodall), who was heading west from
North Carolina where he was born on 5 January 1828.(2) They moved on to Texas and
settled near her folks in the Nip and Tuck area, just south of
Tatum.
Riley joined the Confederate Army and
while on duty came down with "camp fever" (dysentery) in
Louisiana. She went over and sneaked him out and brought him home,
but he died shortly afterward on 5 April 1865,(2) and is buried at Harmony Hill
Cemetery, just south of Tatum, Texas. Mary Ann was a staunch
supporter of the Confederacy and during the war she turned her
wealth into Confederate money. At the end of the Civil War, she
had nothing, losing both her husband and her money.
Mary Ann Woodall and her five children
went to live on a farm of her brother, W. A. Dollahite, which was
five miles south of Hallsville. They lived in a large one-room log
house and cooked over a large fireplace that was about 7 feet
wide. James and William worked on the farm and helped their
mother.
Mary had two children by B. F.
Haliburton: Sarah, married a Virgil Calloway; and a son, James.
The children of Riley and Mary Ann Woodall are listed under
"Woodall."
